Unlike in other parts of the world, dog sledding in Greenland is not a tourist activity – it is an authentic part of Greenlandic culture and is deeply rooted in the local lifestyle. Dog Sledding Discovery tour is the perfect way to explore this unique part of Arctic culture and the bond between sledge dogs and the humans.

The Discovery Tour is approximately 2 hours long, and you will go through a mountainous area with experienced local hunters who always oversee their dogs. The given price is based on 2 person per group during this excursion. 

Historically, dog sledding is the only transportation in Greenland, and it is well preserved till now. When winter comes and snow starts to fall, it’s the season for dogsledding in Greenland. Dogsledding is an authentic experience compared to other modern types of winter transport like snowmobiles.

Seated on the sledge with a local musher, the mountains around you seem slightly higher and you are closer to the snow-covered ground. Everything around you is calm, all you can hear is the panting of the sledge dogs, their paws pounding against the squeaking snow. You are moving forward fast, but still, you have the time to observe the breath-taking nature around you. Imagine this tour as a time machine, taking you back hundreds of years, doing exactly the things the Greenlanders did at that time.

If you have never tried snowmobiling before but want to try it out, then Snowmobile Tour for Beginners is perfect for you! Travelling with an experienced tour guide, you will learn the necessary skills for riding a snowmobile and driving it yourself!

During this one-hour experience, our tour guide will teach you basic skills about driving the snowmobile and ensure you know safety rules before driving yourself. Once you are familiar with the basic skills, you will have the chance to practice it on a training track before venturing into the backcountry.

With Sisimiut getting smaller behind us, you may get the feeling that you are flying through a snow-decorated world. There will regular breaks for snacks and hot drinks and of course time to take some pictures to mark this unique journey. At the end of the tour, everyone will receive a certificate as proof that you have done the basic training for snowmobiling. You don’t need to hold a valid driving licence to join this excursion. Never tried snowmobiling before but always wanted to? This tour combines an introductory lesson with the opportunity to drive into the mountainous area situated just east of Sisimiut.

We start with a one-hour introduction to the basic skills needed for driving a snowmobile. Our tour guide will also teach you safety rules, and train you to drive on a training track. Once you have gone through necessary training, and the guides are sure you are skilled enough to drive, we will move to the second and more exciting step – journeying into the backcountry!

The route we take is the most popular snowmobiling tour in Sisimiut and will take you through ascents, descents, and wonderful slopes. We move fast, leaving everything behind – city noises, work pressures, and daily chores. All you can feel is the thrilling freedom, the cold fresh air, and your heartbeat as you explore the Arctic landscape.

For this excursion, we receive booking till the 4 days prior to the departure time of the excursion. However, please note that limited seats are provided. Late booking may be unavailable.

For excursions cancelled by Arctic Adventure ApS under this situation, our customers will get a 100% refund.

EQUIPMENT LIST

  • Other clothing should be picked according to weather that day, you will not get much colder on the glacier as on the ground.
  • Sturdy Hiking Boots – waterproof with good ankle support.
  • Woollen/or thermal windproof hat, which covers your neck (alternatively, thermal face mask);
  • Woollen/or thermal gloves (ideal as a base layer under waterproof gloves or mittens);
  • Woollen/or thermal socks
  • Warm, insulated winter jacket and snow trousers or salopettes;
  • Woollen long sleeved shirts/or thermal shirts
  • Thick sweater and woollen pullovers;
  • Heat pads for hands and feet (especially for dog sled tours).
  • Lip balm, cream and moisturizer
